GL1200 Head Gasket Replacement

Post by steve allen » Thu Apr 17, 2014 7:32 am

To replace a head gasket, do I have to remove cams out of head? Can't just the entire head assembly be removed and head gasket replaced and entire head replaced as one unit? I have a bit of coolant going out exhaust and found washed plug on right side of motor, so, I am replacing both head gaskets to correct this issue. But, as I read the Haynes manual, it's not real clear if unit can be removed as one entire unit, cause its refers to cam rebuild just before head removal. Thanks, any help and guidance will be appreciated. Steve

I don't think the valve assembly has to come off...however you might want to have the head checked for cracks or warping..
Even if you do a DIY head resurfacing.
You know, the piece of glass and sandpaper route.
Both the head and block must be absolutely flat and clean before you put it back together.
Don't forget to tighten back on "by the book" sequence and steps.
There aluminum so they gouge easily with even a razor blade.Be careful.
