new issue ticking after stator install????

Postby wing86new1 » Tue Apr 22, 2014 7:08 am

Here is a issue that I cant figure out, replaced the stator and the clutch pack in the 1200, now after the 1st start it ticks - not really loud, I do have a exhaust leak after the header pipe on the 1 side (have seal on order) the tick goes away when I rev the engine but returns at idle, does not run rough- starts right away- charges good and clutch engages good.
is it possible to hear the exhaust valves through this leak? or what do think is happening ?

How I isolate a noise...
Obtain about 6 feet of hose.My favorite is a flexible 3/8" Id.
Get the noise going, hold one end of the hose to your ear and move the other end toward the noise area. Its easy to pinpoint the source. Its very accurate in locating where the noise is loudest rather that just somewhere about there.

Could it be the fuel pump? Un plug electrical connector while idling see if ticking quits.

Same thing happened to me last year. Does it get quieter when you pull in the clutch handle? I figured I had a rod bearing going bad  Don't really want to tear it apart again. But figure when I do, I might as well finish the entire engine rebuild, as I've already done the heads, the stator, clutch, timing belts... But I will have to put it off for next winter. Riding season is here!!

well still waiting for exhaust seal to come in I will post what I find but I was able to borrow a engine stethoscope and was able to determine that the noise is not coming from the internal part of the engine (no rattle or knocking at all) so I am leaning more toward the exhaust leak is what I am hearing, as far as pulling in the clutch there is no change in the noise

well all seems ok now, the damaged seal was allowing me to hear the exhaust valves
