Gl1200 wiring issues

Postby basher » Sat May 24, 2014 12:46 pm

Some serious head scratching been going on here
I seem to have interaction between my lights and indicators.
I have cut all the wires of from the back end so it's not one of the bulb holders back there.
Before I did that I unplugged the fairing and had the same problem just at the back.
I am now completely lost and don't know what to try next.
Please help if you can, cheers Bash

Hard to pinpoint what problem you have without a better description of the "interaction" ,however when a lamp comes on when another circuit is activated, the culprit is usually a bad ground.
All dark green wires are usually common grounds. You might start by getting the interaction to happen and then, either measure its ground or augment it with a good ground wire from the battery.
I have had to run a temporary ground to the turn signal lamp till I could find the corroded wire.

the interaction is when I have my lights on they dim with the speed of the indicators,
have ruled a weak battery out cos it still happens with the bike running and its charging well.
indicators work ok on there own as do the lights its only when you try both you get a problem.
the amp meter reads 12.4 on the brown wires I have cut of to the rear and with the indicators on it "flashes"
12.4 to 12.1v.
have tried the earths with the meter and getting between 0.03 and 0.3v.
only the front lights are connected at the moment but when the back was connected I tried unplugging the fairing
and the problem was still there, now I only have the fairing plugged in and its still there making me think is there something in the middle that may be causing it.

forgot to mention if I take the parking lights out at the front so there are only dash lights on you can still see the neutral light flickering, just thought it may be worth mentioning.

First thing to think about: the wiring and connectors are older then 27 yrs! IWhat I would do:
Check all connectors from the indicators to the battery...
Best would be to take out the inserts of the connectors, remove corrosion, clean them and put them back together.
The connector to the fairing is suspicious. I would inspect it, make it corrosion free and clean it.
I bypassed the wiring to the headlights on my bike (and to the ignition). Measure the voltage on your battery and the voltage on the headlight terminal (the connector to the bulb). A drop in voltage of 2 Volts or more indicates that the wiring is bad...
Stuff cleaned connectors with diëlectric grease.

thanks so far,i just had the meter back out(as if I ever get it put away) and checked the earths on the indicators when flashing and it was pulsing between 0.05 and 0.12v,also while I was there I turned all lights of and checked the stereo live and that was pulsing 12.4 and 11.7v which means I think my lights are ok its the indicators causing the problem.
just wondering what to check next,is there an earth on the body I haven't seen,i have cleaned the two obvious ones of,one on the battery and one on the regulator under the tank but still no joy.
any Harry Potters out there that could wave a wand at it I can supply the wand.
cheers,Bash
