Speed and trip guages not working

Postby tbeiler » Sun Jun 01, 2014 8:10 am

86 Aspencade with digital guages.
Out for a ride yesterday with my son on the back, all of a sudden speed guage doesn't register speed anymore (reads 0 mph at any speed). Also the trip odometer stopped working. All other guages work.
Any ideas where to look to correct this annoyance.

Speed sensor is a little black box on the bottom of the left fork. cable from it is usually tethered to the brake hose. There is a connector on the left side between frame and fairing that you can get to after taking the false tank off. As far as a test procedure, check your manual or maybe someone has that info. You will have to be able spin the front wheel to get any kind of a signal out of it.

Thanks, I'll try to get to it in the next few days. The other thing I forgot to mention is that the turn signals don't auto cancel after the trip and speed guages stopped working. Not sure if this is related or not.

Yes it's related. The canceler module receives pulses from the spedo circuit....
There's plenty of posts about the speed sensor connected to the front wheel, how to test it both mechanically and electrically.

Well spent some time today to check out the service manual. Looks like the headlight needs to come off. I'm not sure if this is enough for access to the connectors or if the front fairing needs to be removed as well. I will also check the speed sensor at the wheel.
Can anyone chime in if the fairing has to be removed.
Also, the service manual said first to check the sub-fuses. Are these the ones inside the front left pocket.

check first if you hub is moving if it's a mechanical hub... first take the screw out that's holding the cable see if the little tab on the inside is moving if you turn the tire. If it is turning and you can pull out the cable and see if the ends on it are ok and last but not least no you do not need to pull all the faring of the bike. If you remove the chrome piece above the headlight you should have enough access to the cable to replace it if you need to... I already went through the process this spring

Dwayne is right that the trim piece between the headlight and the windshield will give you enough room to get to the connectors for the instrument cluster. You have to remove the top headlight mounting bracket if the tab is still on it that hold the wires in tight. Dwayne is incorrect about the cable, or the drive at the wheel. You don't have a speedo cable, it's a magnetic pickup. I also think there is a connector on the left side, right behind the forks, under the false tank. The cable from the sensor doesn't run all the way to the dash. Pretty unlikely that it came unplugged, but will need to find it if the sensor is the issue.
