Just purchased bike. rode home. balanced carbs, adjusted throttle free play new oil and antifreeze. the bike runs great but now seems to run hot acording to guage. is there a way to check the radiator itself to make sure its full. the coolant bottle is full. is it possible for the hose from the coolant bottle to the radiator to become plugged or kinked. could balamcing the carbs be causing the bike to run hot if i messed something up there. i do get a strong fuel smell from time to time but no leaks of any kind. like this site alot. very informative

Depends on what you call hot.

The handbook states anywhere between 2 an 8 bars is normal.

If it is getting higher than that the fan should switch on.

If the fan is switching on and it is still staying over 8 you have a problem.

Idling it should cycle the fan on and off between 7 & 8 bars.

Thanks Tricky. I will check the fan operation today. I know it is coming on but not sure at what point. I guess I was assuming the guage should read the same as a car, about mid way. 7-8 bars just scared me a little on a bike that I have never ridden. I havent been around bikes for awhile and never owned a big tourer. Love the bike

My 85 ran 4/5 bars normal and the fan would kick on at 6 and off at 5. Never went over 8.
My 86 runs 3 normal and the fan kicks on at 4 almost 5. Has never gotten over 5. Waiting for summer and a long hill in the mountains.
You should see a small change in the fluid level in the collant bottle between hot and cold. If no change I would check the hose between the radiator and the coolant bottle. If it's working like it should it will draw fluid into the radiator as the engine cools. The only other way is to remove the radiator cap (when Cold) to see if it's full.
The smell of gas. No sugestions at the moment.....Enjoy the Ride.....

Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

thanks Mooseman I had the chance to put 200 miles on the bike over the weekend. The first ride it went to 8 bars but never above. The next day it went to 7 bars and never above. fan appears to be working normally. on around 7 and off at 6 or in that range. I did look thru the owners manual and this appears normal for the bike. hoping to put alot more miles on it this summer.
