Can I use a Pulse Generator from a GL1500 in my '85 GL1200A?

Postby PHunter » Tue Jun 17, 2014 8:16 am

Hello, gentlemen I hope I'm posting this in the right forum. New Wing rider here, I just aquired my first Goldwing, it's a 1985 GL1200A. I'm really excited to get some saddle time on it, sadly, It won't start, the Pulse Generator's are cooked.

I have been told that the upgrade for this part is from the GL1500 and that no modifications are needed for the A/I models. I have searched the net for about 2 days and have been unable to verify this. Before I order the part, I would like to know for certain.

I am hoping that this forum could help me. Any information on this job is appreciated.

Thanks for your help!

I've heard of people trying this as well..but I haven't seen or heard of anyone who actually tried it successfully. Not that it hasn't been done. A quick search turns up people talking about it, one guy trying it...but no results posted.

That's what I keep coming up with, also. I'm beginning to believe it's just a fictitious repair. Something people keep bring up as fact but with no basis. I'm posting on three different forums, hoping someone has a yes or no answer.

I say doubtful that it's plug and play...The position of the wires on the 1200 come off the side..the pictures for the 1500 come off the bottom...You might be able to put a spacer to lift it up a bit but keep a eye
Now..that doesn't mean that it's impossible to do but I'd be looking at as many pictures of ignition pulse coils as your search can do....
Try...this part...30300-MN1-680...

Even more to look at...83 Honda CX 650 C CX650 Custom pick up pickup pulse pulser ignition coil
Perhaps a pair of these...1984 HONDA ATC 200 S 3 WHEELER PICKUP PULSE GENERATOR COIL CDI.
Or this...HONDA XR250L 1993 PULSE COIL
Have you seen these.??Honda CB900 C CB 900 Custom CB900C pick up pickup pulse pulser coil
One would think something would work... 05 Honda CBR600RR CBR600 CBR 600RR - signal pulsar. It "appears"to have a mount that's close....however it's match might have to have the wires extended as they would be coming out the wrong side....

A bit more research is in order...
Also a point of interest....I have a Kohler twin cylinder engine running with a 1980 gl1100 ignition coil,a 83 ignition module and a ABS pulse sending unit from the rear end of a 1996 Ford explorer.for the "pulse coil"
I've also remounted a ignition pulse coil/igniter from a Subaru engine into a gl1000....I didn't think it would work...had to modify it a bit...the spark knocked me on my butt....

As long as you can overcome the physical restrictions and alignment, almost anything from that era would work...
Or so I think....By the way..I just E-Bayed Honda pulse coil..
