aftermarket tail/turn conversion pigtail

Postby dkdc12 » Fri Jun 27, 2014 8:27 am

Hi there GOLDWINGdocs I'm new to the forum. I've liked what I've read in the past so I thought I would join!
My problem is, I bought one of those rear light pigtails that allows the turn signals to act as brake lights and such. However; the OE pigtail on the bike has a 5 pin connector while the converter pigtail has a 6 pin connector. Our bike is the Interstate so I looked at a schematic for the SEI wiring thinking maybe there was a difference with the fancier bike but the tail light/turn light connectors are the same. I see these aftermarket pigtails for sale on lots of those online stores (Sabercycle, etal) so they must sell and therefore work for someone. So can anyone give me (clueless) a clue? Thanks. The pigtail I'm referring to can be seen at Cyclemax.com item #B2-204.

I'm curious, what does the 5 pin connector look like? As far as I know, all of those Hitachi-type connectors have an even number of pin spaces. Could you post a picture of it?

Hi, the pigtail on the bike (OEM) looks exactly the same as that B2-204. Your correct the "Honda" pigtail does have the six ports but only five are used. the difference is that the aftermarket has two yellow wires where the original has one yellow. So that extra yellow lead on the aftermarket mates up with an empty port. I looked at a wiring diagram of an SEI model figuring it might be different being a fancier model (we have the Interstate) but it showed the same set up as mine. The B2-204 fits right in to where the original was right on the back side of the tail/turn light housing and looks right except for that one extra yellow wire in the socket. Thanks.

Have you tried plugging it in to see if it actually works the way it is?

Well I went and plugged in the aftermarket pigtail and it blew the fuse. I then closely looked at the wiring itself on the pigtail and discovered the grounds were not in the same locations. I posted a pic below. Now I am really confused. Again any ideas. I contacted the retail store about this and said he would contact the manufacturer, we'll see.

That's bizarre - looking at the pigtail, it's obviously a direct short to ground, which is why it blew your fuse.

I can't see how they expect that harness to do anything at all. You could modify it by swapping pins and inserting a diode, but...I would first look to the retailer to get it fixed. I believe you said you got it at Cyclemax, I know Gary there will do what it takes to make it right.

I got feedback from Gary at Cyclemax (which was highly appreciated) about the aftermarket stop/turn light pigtail. He asked around at the manufacturer and said no one is around that dealt with this item when it was first marketed. So no answer so I just removed the pins in the clip lined them up with cycle side of the clip spliced the wire that was aligned with the open port and it worked. Not the way someone should have to deal with a plug and play part but what the hey. Again thanks for all the input. Steve
