gl 1200 not charging

Postby nevada4419 » Sat Jul 12, 2014 10:05 am

Thanks in advance for help with my 1984 interstate that’s not charging. Both my plugs look good, the one by the battery and the one at the rectifier/voltage reg with no corrosion. I did the stator check with the plug at battery with the plug connect together. The negative test lead connected to ground and the positive check one at a time to the 3 stator wires. At 1500 rpm the reading was about 1.7 volts on all 3 stator wires. I installed a new starter relay ( I thought the fuse could be bad) I was hoping to get lucky but still nothing, 11.9 volts at 1500 rpm.

Disconnect your stator (yellow wires) and measure the resistance between each wire (yellow to yellow) and the ohms should be low like a few ohms and readings should be close to equal with each other, if not then you have some stator coils that are bad. Then measure each yellow wire to ground and should read as an open circuit (no resistance). If you have some resistance there then you have a coil or coils shorted to ground.

Thank much for the help. I did the two test and each passed the test. The 3 yellow wire plug to the left of the battery looks good (not burned or melted) and the rectifier plug in the false tank also looks ok. I did a test at 2500 rpm with the meter on ac with plug at batt disconnected neg lead on a yellow wire and positive lead on another yellow and get no ac voltage? The stator must be bad (bad news).

I think I'm missing something here. Do you have 14 volts dc at 2000 rpm at the battery with everything connected? Also again with all connected you should get 50 to 60+ volts AC at the yellow wire plug (measured across yellow wire to yellow wire and NOT to ground). If no voltage is there when running then you might have a connection problem somewhere or a voltage regulator problem.

I’m getting 11.9 volts at the battery with 2000 rpm. I did the ac check at the 3 yellow wire plug just left of the battery with the plug disconnected checking the stator side of the plug yellow to yellow and I’m not getting any voltage at all? Should I do the ac check with the plug connected?

Sorry about late response. I have satellite internet and heavy weather brought it down for a few hours.
I see your problem clearly now. Sorry about the confusion. You should have substantial voltage across all yellows. If not then it's a bad stator. I would consider a poorboy alternator conversion maybe.

Thanks for the help I Was afraid that the stator had gone bad.
