Poorboy Conversion

Postby nevada4419 » Tue Jul 15, 2014 10:34 am

I have a 1984 Interstate 1200 with a bad stator. I’m thinking of trying to do a poor-boy conversion myself. Are there any instructions I could download to see how difficult it is (PDF file?). About how much would my total cost be. Thanks for the help

I had about $200 in total when I did my gl1100 I. That includes the alternater. One of the best mods I have done to my bike. Lots of lights, heated gear, electronics... and power to spare. I did it by getting the parts at different places. I did not buy a kit.

google poorboy and you will find numerous threads on the install with specific instructions.

The one step I forgot to do---Place a bar in the timing belt cover and secure it to the engine, drill a new hole in the cover to put the bolt through the cover and a screw into the bar. This will let you remove the cover without taking everything apart to change the timing belts in the future. Well worth the time to install it.

pm me if any questions.

there are some pics on this link to see how it is done with no welding.
Kinda lengthy but has some great points while doing the conversion.

Does anyone know if Don Piggot still sells the Poor-Boy kit and how to order, is there a web page?

I have completed the Poor Boy Conversion on my GL1200 Interstate and happy to say I’m now charging 14.28 at 1500 RPM. Thanks Don Pigott for designing and selling this great Kit, It’s definitely worth the price Don gets. Also like to thank Scot Thompson for the great installation instructions with photos, very helpful, here’s the link. http://s1247.photobucket.com/user/Sc...?sort=2&page=1
