The 1200 fuel injection is not like a modern car fuel injection. Modern car fuel injection have lots of sensors that detect how the engine is running and continuously adjust the mapping in order to best utilize the fuel and create the least emissions.

The 1200 has rather ancient fuel injection technology, where the system is mapped using a static table based on the physical characteristics of the bike, and for the most part doesn't change.

That said, I know several people have replaced their exhausts, including with rather free-flowing Harley take-offs, and the bikes ran just fine.
