Breaks up..sounds like a rev limiter

Postby sthgardner » Thu Jul 24, 2014 12:47 am

I have just purchased a 1986 GL1200I (my first non-Harley in 20 years) and rode it from Minnesota back to Oregon last week. It starts, warms up and idles fine. But under load after a certain RPM it breaks up. Feels like a rev limiter, total power loss until I back off on the throttle. It will do it in every gear, 1st is 6500 rpm or more, 2nd is around 5500 - 6000, 3rd is arounf 5000, 4th is about 4500, and 5th is about 4000 or so. Not as violent in 5th but you can hear the miss. I have replaced the fuel filter. Bike has just over 39000 miles on it. Also pulling a sidecar around. Fuel mileage ranged from 18 mpg in the high winds of South Dakota to 23 mpg in the calm cool of Wyoming mountains. Seems low even with the hack. Should I seafoam it?
Thanks
PS Love the bike

If you rode it that far you should have gotten all dirty fuel out of the tank, if it had been sitting before you picked it up then you can try some SeaFoam. But take an oil squirt can and with the engine running squirt a little oil around the base of the carbs, especially around the vacuum lines. You might find a leak, the engine will change rpm and you will hear a slurping noise.

Thanks. Was planning on seafoam tonight. Also have carb rebuild kits coming. Along with the o rings for the mounting blocks.

I would try a new set of spark plugs & check plug wires also. Could be a cheap fix.
