front brake keeps seize get stuck

Postby jmal » Thu Jul 24, 2014 8:23 pm

front left brake gets stuck after bleeding it works for a while then sticks again and unless you open the bleeder screw the pistons don't push back in caliper bad or master cylinder?

Have you checked the small return hole in the master cylc as it maybe plugged up. Other then this it may be time for a rebuild.

Likely the caliper seals have corrosion behind them... Remove the seals and scrape out all the corrosion and then apply caliper grease in the groove with new seals... You must get all the corrosion out... If you can easily push the cups back into the caliper bore with your thumbs then you likely got it all... If not go back in and clean em some more... Might better throw a rebuild kit into the master cylinder while you’re at it as well...

PS do not use pliers or vise grips to remove the caliper cups... Apply compressed air to the banjo fitting hole of the caliper with a rubber tipped blow gun... Place a 1/2" thick piece of wood in to keep the cups from flying out... It also aids in getting the really stuck one out... I just progressively put thinner and thinner pieces of wood in till they are just about completely out... then work em out the rest of the way by hand... Do keep fingers clear of the cup area when doing this as they can come out to the wood like a rocket...

thanks for the answers the return hole is the 1 that's cover with that has the metal cover then yes its clean because if that cover not in place fluid will spray out and the piston are now out the piston an d caliper r clean of rust and no galls but the bike did not move 4 5years before I got it can . the seals look bad that the only thing stuck to the pistons and caliper would this cause the problem? the rubber seals left a rubber ridge on the piston

As ED Z said use compressed air to blow them out but If that will not work you can put a grease gun on the zerk fitting and pump it up with grease and it will push the pistons out without blowing them across the room haha--------------------Hal

Indeed, without the 1/2" wood block in where the pads go the pistons would sail across the room if using air pressure...
And usually it's the one piston that is not stuck that would let go first... Thus the wood prevents that one from escaping before the stuck one is forced to move... Once ya work down to a 1/4" block the pistons usually can be worked out by hand...

I just put a piece of steel welding stock in the caliper. Then pump the brakes. The piston that moves more freely will come out and contact the steel bar, at which point it stops and the other piston gets pumped out. Once they both make it out, you can easily wiggle them free - no compressed air required:

I used to do it this way, but found compressed air make for a good deal less mess... Most all the brake fluid is evacuated from the reservoir and then from the caliper outside of the shop... I have never faced a piston that would not come out with compressed air... But, to each his own method... I start out using 1/2 " or 3/4 wood block then move down to a 1/4" thick block...

rather simple task ... Just push in the plunger a bit and remove the snap ring... Then it just comes apart ...

Have a look at this - it's almost identical to the 1200: How to rebuild your front master cylinder

My '87 had the same problem when I got it. It also had been setting up. There is a very small hole in the bottom of the master cyl - not the one with the little cover over it. This one is more to the center of the master cyl reservoir. Mine was so blocked I couldn't find it. I had to take the master cyl apart to find it by looking where the plunger goes. I used a torch cleaner to open it.

Hope this helps.
