Bent Center Stand

Postby revtmuller1 » Fri Aug 01, 2014 9:17 am

Hi,
Just wondering how typical is encountering a bent center stand? Just discovered mine is bent on my '87 GL1200A with around 89000 miles on it. Is it a common thing? Thanks

The only time I have seen a bent center stand is if someone had put custom or aftermarket exhaust and the stand interfered with it, mainly the foot pedal part of it. It's not an easy thing to bend and I have never been able to bend one back to a shape that I was happy with.

Thanks for that rzaugg. I think there is some rusting going on as well so that might account for a weakened condition.

The "new" center stand is on the way! Should be here soon. Thanks Ed Z. I trust this will be the last one I deal with.

do you mean bent as in when using the stand, the rear wheel doesn't get off the ground?

That is correct. I am scheduled to replace the center stand on Friday as a result of my local Honda Dealers diagnosis.

ok, sounds like another possible scenario has been ruled out, the frames and or mounting points for the centerstand are known to rot out,

if that was the case here, then a fresh or known to be good centerstand will not fix the problem

Thanks for that 82aspen. We will do more investigation tomorrow when I can get it on a lift and check things out. I'll keep you updated.

More often it is the frame and/or center stand mounts that have rusted and weakened than the center stand itself. I could do a very close inspection with a bright light of the whole area.

Thanks, WingAdmin. We have looked closely at the whole area and cannot find any excessive rust and deterioration, We did do some measurements of the height of the tire and wheel and discovered that the "new" wheel and the tire that came with it is a bit taller that my original wheel and tire. We are suspecting the tire wall is taller that normal. Have you encountered this problem with tires being slightly off measurement?
