GL1200 LTD cam belt cover gaskets

Postby downhomr » Tue Aug 12, 2014 3:06 pm

Greeting all...I have to go into the cam covers to replace a leaking camshaft seal, and or,crank shaft seal.

Can anyone tell me why Ron Ayers microfiche calls out 2 different gaskets for each side?.

And, how would I know, I'm ordering the right one?.

Thanks very much.

If I understand your question. The valve cover and timing belt cover gaskets are usually good to use again. Where is your oil leak. The shifter oil seal is the most common place for oil to leak.

Micro fiches usually have some kind of sign showing direction.

Unless the gaskets are physically damaged you won't need to replace. They aren't a critical item and are reusable.

The timing belt cover is not a bad place to use silicone sealer because the silicone cannot enter the engine oil and clog up an oil passage. If you do use any kind of sealer there, DO NOT seal up the drain holes at the bottom of the covers, water can build up inside and quickly rot away the belts.

Thank you all for your imput...that's why I love this site so much.
The drain holes referenced, is where I'm getting my leak...smart thinking on Hondas' part.
I get a dime size spot over night. I leave it on the side stand mostly...so that I can feel
confident that it is leaking out...and, it is good once in awhile, to poke a thin wire into those
drain holes on each side, to ensure they are clear.
When i get to it...I will just clean the gaskets up good...make sure they're nice and dry, then re-use them.
Thank you all again very much...I really appreciate it.
