Is the speedometer cable mechanical or electronic

Post by GrimReaper86 » Fri Aug 15, 2014 7:12 pm

Ok, I have a 86 1200 Aspencade.  The digital speedometer isn't working.  I've gone thru the posts, the shop manual, clymer and haynes. But, I still don't quite understand the cable. Is the cable from the front wheel mechanical or electronic? At the wheel, the box has a recessed slot which is turned by a blade at the wheel. The blade turns as the wheel is turned. I guess I'm wondering is the box at the end of the cable converting some type of electrical signal? And, can the box be taken apart? Any help would be appreciated. :?

Welcome to the forum

Yes it is electronic on your 86A. At the wheel drive box there is a wire going to the speedometer.
Yes the box can be opened. No repair parts available nor are the boxes available new, just used.

Test it first.verify the mechanical part is OK.
Verify the volts at the sensor plug.
Then disassemble. Some just have a loose magnet inside.
If it must be replaced,I've heard other Hondas use the same part.
Site searching will yield enough information to get you through this procedure.
