Around $120 for new/aftermarket. Probably half that for a used one, but not what I'd recommend.

WingAdmin's number is for the part by itself. If you have to pay somebody to replace it for you (pull the engine) you're probably looking at $1000 - $1200 USD.

The 1200 starter can be removed without pulling the engine. It's a bit more involved than on the 1100, you have to remove the left footpeg and shifter, unbolt the exhaust from the exhaust manifold on all four cylinders and allow it to drop, remove the exhaust studs from #4 cylinder exhaust manifold, and you then have clearance to pull the starter out without having to remove the engine. It's done on the sidestand just like the 1100, to keep the sprocket aligned inside.

Aw crap. My first answer was for the stator ($130 for new) but yes, the engine has to be pulled to replace that. My second answer was for a starter, and no you don't have to pull the engine for that one. Your guess as good as mine whether stater means stator or starter. :)

Don't know that it was actually his hands that really got him into trouble as much as another body part. :)

I wish I would have came on this forum before I took the bike in for the stator/ AS that was what they said it was,
And if I would have read all the things that could go wrong (I would have saved alot of money )
all I would have to do was cut off the side wire and hard wired it to the bike taking it away from the switch.
Instead after a new stator and water pump and battery and 1961.00 The shop mec. when I asked him how was the stator....he said oh it was going..this site ROCKS so if you have a problem check here first......Thanks for what you do..
