gl1200 engine oil leak

Postby robertf1365 » Mon Sep 01, 2014 10:19 am

my gl1200 is leaking engine oil out of a small hole just underneath the oil filter housing. Has anyone else had this problem

As you are standing in front of the bike looking at it, just to the right of the oil filter and underneath is a small machined hole. It is the weep hole and it is an open air space in the water pump bearings between the Oil side and the Antifreeze side.
If you look there and see anti freeze or oil dripping from that hole then you need to start gathering materials for a Water pump change out.

Water pump is ~ $125
Gasket set is - ~$30
Oil Change - your brand varies of course.

That would be absolute minimum costs and plan about a full day give or take.

Have a look at How to remove and replace your water pump - that's for an 1100, but the 1200 is very similar.

Being a first time wing owner, this stirred my curiosity. I checked the weep hole on my wing and discovered the po had plugged it. its pretty obvious too, looks like a smear of jb weld.
what do I do now? Can I drill through to see if it might be leaking. this is not good!!

Yeah, I would drill that out. The number of bikes where I have seen owners fix an "oil leak" or "coolant leak" by plugging up this hole is astounding. Epoxy, pieces of wood, metal screws, all sorts jammed up in there to "fix the leak."

See another owner who did just this: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=23505#p131604

Okay, thanks. Hopefully, if there is a leak I can fix it.
