86 Goldwing gl1200 - shut off while riding

Postby DennisMoeser » Wed Sep 24, 2014 4:04 pm

Greetings Wing enthusiasts.. my bike has been running great until today.. I was riding and while stopped at a light it just powered off.. no electric.. no nothing.. I noticed a small faint of smoke coming from the front fairing.. I checked all fuses and seem to be o.k.. im assuming its electrical.. all electric is down even w/ switch on.. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Get your test light out.Start at the battery post, work your way to the starter solenoid and both red wires on it should have power. One of those goes to the ignition switch...when the switch is on..power should be on the black wire feeding the fuse block.

Also check your master "dogbone" fuse inside the solenoid housing. Remove it and check it for cracks.

It could be the starter relay (Dogbone Fuse). I put a new one on my 84. Buy one on Amazon or E-Bay for about $15 and they come with a replaceable fuse.

I thank you for the replies.. dogbone was the 1st check.. all wires appear to be tight.. I replaced w/ new fuse just in case there was a split.. the power off was strange - all systems were running great.. I was idled at a light - then stalled.. ALL power went out and there was a faint smoke that came from the front left fairing.. will be tearing down the front end to diagnose this wkend.. thinking ignition switch.. but if thats the case.. why would the clock not work and the smoke.. the smoke appeared to be electrical

There was a recent thread that was almost exactly the same as your experience here. The other member had several "rotten" (for lack of a better term) fuses, if I recall correctly, and after sorting through them, I believe his electrical troubles were fixed. Maybe it was Admin that mentioned having fuses fall apart due to age... it's worth a look...
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

There are two fuses under the left pocket in the faring. The 3amp fuse controls the clock, as well as trip odometer and radio memory. the shutting down is what concerns me, as this circuit shouldn't affect the running of the bike. Did you have it running after the shutdown? My concern here is that the bike is running on battery power, which would indicate a charging issue, particularly the stator and the leads to the regulator/rectifier.

Thank you again for the responses,, I have been a proud owner of this bike for 5 months - this Goldwing has been in the family since it left the showroom - so i would like to keep it in the great condition as it was given to me - ive owned many bikes and this one is my first dresser.

Since the shutdown on weds,, bike has not run,, no power whatsoever,, i took a 300 mile trip the day before,, ran GREAT,, nxt day - drove maybe 2 miles - stood at red light - and it was like the bike got unplugged - dead,, no clock,, no lights,, nothing,, i have the owners manual and been studying the wiring schematics,, the 2 fuses under the front left storage tested good,, last night i started taking apart the front fairing - Again - when this happened - there was a quick/faint smoke - like a wire shorted - coming from left of the ignition switch under fairing - there is a wired box secured underneath w/ a boot covering it(under the helmet plug panel) - that might be the potential victim - need to identify the box...

Update on power outage. After many long hours of frustration, testing and more frustration, decided to start at the beginning again. Checked and cleaned all grounds. Confirmed continuity of each wire in most of the harnesses. Ran tests on starter relay and ignition, they passed. Confirmed fuse box to be in working order. As I was doing all of this, for the third time, I made sure to clean all the contacts and lube them with dielectric grease. Rerouted all PO's accessories wireing and eliminated unneeded and unused miscellaneous wireing. Put it all back together and there was light! It seems to me the problem was slightly corroded harness connectors between the ignition switch and fuse box which gave me some confusing continuity readings initially. Went through and cleaned ALL connectors and used dielectric grease on all as they were dry to begin with and I never want this to happen again!!!!!
Thanks for the help. It is appreciated. Learned quite a bit about the electrical system of the 1986 Honda Goldwing GL 1200 Interstate, more than I ever wanted.

I seem to recall an ignition switch recall mentioned somewhere, for the 1200's... could it be your key switch gave up the ghost?

Thats what im thinking,, this evening i will check it out - i am leaning towards a dried connection hence the small amount of smoke that desipated from that area before it died,, any suggestions on ignition harness access and removal of parts/suggested videos (?)

This is the area where the faint "electrical" smoke arose from.. all harness/ connectors were tight.. relived w/ electric grease.. test light tmrw

Well after a few more hours of electrical diagnostics.. it was indeed the main wish bone fuse harness near the battery.. the connectors were old and one of the main positive wires corroded and snapped.. new connectors..wire shrink tubing and im back on the road.. I removed all plastics and went over all connections and used teflon electric grease on all connections.. my uncle who was the previous owner stored in a non temperature regulated warehouse which dried out some noticeable areas.. I've worked on boats a majority of my mechanical experiences.. I am a strong believer of coating all connectors and intricate parts w/ corrosion block.. thank you all for your responses

Marine grade corrosion guard.. great for protecting mechanical and electrical connections..
