1984 Goldwing Interstate Front Tire Replacement

Postby garylmartin1 » Sun Sep 28, 2014 8:16 am

I can't believe this isn't already "asked and answered," but I didn't see it in forums or find it in search........so here we go. Can anybody tell me the proper procedure for removing and reinstalling a new tire on this bike............specifically the proper procedure to reinstall the "pinch collars" as I have heard them called.......that actually hold the axle to the forks? I can't seem to find the proper way to do this, or any kind of torque specs for this procedure.
Thanks,

Gary

Are you are talking about the axle retainers at the bottom of the front shocks? If so then take a look at the retainer bottom and you will see an arrow. That arrow should be pointing forward. When you install the retainer you should tighten the front nut all the way tight to it's torque specs then the rear nut should be tightened to it's specs. The whole assembly acts as a "pinch" on the axle and that is the way the factory designed it.

Thanks flash1942, that's exactly what I'm talking about. Anybody know the torque specs for these particular nuts that hold the retainers on?

My Manual calls for 14-22 ft/lbs.
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

You're welcome. I was hoping someone else would chime in and either confirm what my manual has, or correct me. It appeared to be an 8mm fastener... I was thinking a 13mm wrench fit it, but I can't remember without going out and trying one on for size.

Both my Honda and Clymer manuals call for 18 ft-lbs.
