Mirrors?

Postby reggiefavre » Thu Oct 23, 2014 12:16 am

Does any one know how to adjust the mirrors on a 1200 interstate. Mine are froze in place, I did not think much about this as the bike sat up over a year. I ordered 2 new ones and I cannot figure how to adjust them. They seem like they are froze up also. HELP!!!
Thanks

The mirrors on the 1200 are a poor design. You must move the entire housing, not the glass. Over time the weight of the housing causes the ball to wear and not hold the mirror in place.
Have you been trying to move just the glass?

I have tried moving the glass and also the housing. Nothing moves. Now that I have the new ones, I will take one of the old ones apart and discover how to adjust it. If any one else has any ideas let me know. When I take the old apart I will post how it's done.
Thanks

The "old" ones you mention may have been aftermarket which are a lot cheaper than OEM ...
but... .. they tend to droop after only a few minutes on any sort of rough road..

Most 1200 owners (like me )who installed the cheaper aftermarket mirrors have added a fixing-in-place screw thru the ball/socket after finding the correct setting .
This means they can nevermore droop, but are only set correctly for the present owner/ driver ( me)

If your replacement ones are the more expensive OEM 's it will not be a problem .... they adjust and stay there.

If you chose to go with the droopy-but-cheaper ones, get back to us and I will tell you how to fix them in place.

I got new ones. They are adjustable. I guess the old ones were froze up.

When i got my '86 that had been setting for 4 year, the mirrors were frozen in place. I keep spraying wd-40 on the ball and tried to move it after each spraying. After a few days they started to move again. I ended up having to buy one anyway, the rubber was all cracked. The new one did move some like was stated above. Got the mirror in the right spot and then took it off and tighten the 10mm nut as tight as I could get it. The mirror does not move any more, fixed the problem.
