85 LTD poor boy conversion

Postby stedy1 » Mon Oct 27, 2014 12:20 pm

Hi new to the forum. Read a lot of interesting information on the poor boy conversions for regular 1200's but not much on the LTD. I have seen pics on LTD conversions and some of the differences to do so on this model. I've seen cooling fans mounted on the front(necessary?) A cooling hose is in the way of the alternator? The fuel injected voltage regulator has 2 plugs and wondered do both just get disconnected without affecting anything else? I also read that using the ND Geo metro alternator resulted in some cutting of the fairing. Some have used the Denso Chevy mini 50 amp which I surmise is a smaller profile. Would this unit eliminate fairing mods? Many feel that the wiring harness is suspect in many of the 1200's electrical problems. Once a conversion is done, are these problems eliminated or compounded?
The threads I have read are roughly 2 years old, are the "Poorboy" kits still available? And are there separate kits for the fuel injected models?
I would truly appreciate anyone's assistance with information of any kind. Or if you have done this conversion and live in CT maybe we can talk about you doing the install for a fee.
I love this machine and would like to extend the season longer by adding heated gear and a GPS so I don't get lost.
Also to have a much more reliable charging system. Thanks

Yes it was from Don, I do not have an LTD but no specifics were ever discussed regarding model. I didn't know there was a difference. Yes I know the LTD is fuel injected. At any rate my total bill was $555. My installation is complete just waiting for new timing belts to arrive today I hope.

When I made my hole in the timing covers I mounted them on a 2x10 pine board, the right cover was raised to match the left by placing a 1" board under it, on top of the 2" x10". I then used a 1" hole saw on my drill press. If I remember correctly the opening in the right cover extends further in. That's why I mounted them solid. I then used a 1" sanding drum on the drill press to smooth and open both halves a bit larger.
