What to replace under timing belt cover?

Postby jtprouty » Mon Oct 27, 2014 12:23 pm

I have a 1984 GL1200i with 157k miles on it that has blown the right crankshaft seal. I'd like to know what else I can change while I have the engine disassembled to change the seal. I'm going to replace the timing belts and the right seal, are there any other seals or consumables I should replace at the same time? Is there a left crankshaft seal that can be replaced?

Also, the place in England that has the crankshaft seal had '84 GL1200 models listed that I've never seen before. Does anyone know if the GL1200i has a comparable model number to those that were sold in Europe?

Thanks for your help,

Jimmy

Hi Jimmy,

You will probably want to rebuild or replace the two tensioner pulleys and check your Pulse generator sensors and wiring/plug for corrosion.

Try this site, www.hondarestoration.com . If they don't have what you need, there is a link to their partner in Europe, CMS.

The last time I had to replace main seals was in 1986 on my 81 GL1100 Interstate. I had to remove the engine and separate the case halves. I just paid Honda to rebuild the engine. The sad thing at the time was, I spent a grand doing the rebuild, then when I went to pick up the engine a week later, the service manager said geez you just missed our crate engine sale! And, you could have bought a brand new 1100 engine with carbs for $500! When? The damn day I dropped off my engine! What an a$$hole!

Anywhoo, good luck with yours.
Alan

On your 84 the pulse generator is probably going to be on the back of the engine. Spin the tensioners like Alan said, you're changing the belts anyway, and the seal.(I am assuming you meant right camshaft seal instead of crankshaft) but I would also take note and investigate why it is leaking. I don't see that as a common fail item.

Follow-up:

Had a local maintenance shop replace the camshaft seals and they found that one of them had simply pushed out of its hole. Had them replace both seals and the timing belts while they were there.
