Turn signals won't cancel after LED upgrade

Postby alwims » Thu Dec 25, 2014 1:32 pm

I just finished most of my conversion to LED lights and flashers on my "87 GL1200A. I'm almost sure this is something I may have to live with, but anyone run into a work around on how to get my turn signals to cancel after a turn? Also I used to be able to push the signal button to turn them off and that doesn't work now. It seems to be connected to the electronic flasher versus the mechanical one that came factory.

The same thing happens on the GL1500. The only real way around it is to put a load resistor across the LEDs, to make them draw more current, so that the auto-cancel will trigger.

I figured that would be the answer, but no thanks. My stator has never worked so little in it's life since going to LED's. I know the stator puts out what it puts out, but it's got to like the less amp draw. Heck I'm getting 12.8 volts at idle now, touch the throttle and it goes up to 13.4 volts.

Since the turn signals are a very intermittently used device, I don't think I'd fore go the loss of the auto cancel for the limited benefit of an intermittent reduction in amp draw. Just my 2 cents. Over the course of a days riding, I doubt the battery/charging system would know the difference. I've also converted many lights to LEDs, and am loving the nicer behavior of the alternator and voltage levels. I skipped the turn signals to avoid such problems.

When I did the LED conversion on my 1500 I hid an incandescent bulb to each side of the amber fairing running light wiring I wired to flash with the indicators, that did the trick, just 2 use a insignificant amount of power, and I had quite a few at hand so it cost 0.
If at first you don't succeed, hide the evidence.

I agree. I added two power resistors, one on each turn signal circuit, strapped to the frame as a heat sink. For how often the turn signals are used, I don't care about the power use - I'm more interested in the sharp, attention-getting on/off flashing of an LED as opposed to an incandescent bulb.

Adding resistors Work, but consume nearly the same power as filament bulbs. It is possible to get new LED type flasher relays fitting perfect in the OEM relay sockets.
