Odometer

Postby calito52 » Fri Feb 06, 2015 6:04 pm

Hi friends,
A few months ago I bought a beautiful 1984 Gl 1200 Aspencade, it has digital speed info and a regular old time odometer. A few days ago I was riding and enjoying my self in the middle of a Patagonia road, close to the end of the world, as we call our Island, Tierra del Fuego, the southest place in Southamerica, I slowed down to watch the odometer go through 49999'9 to stop and take a picture of the 50.000 miles and it never happened.... It just stoped there.
I was dissapointed but kept going home, wondering what happened. I found later a blown fuse that reads Tail/ Meter, which I assume have something to do with tail lights because they worked again, not so with the odometer. Every thing in the glareshield is working, however the odometer refuse to move forward.
How does the the info goes to the mechanical odometer? I can not find info in the maintenance Manual. Is there any easy way to fix it? The closest honda dealer that can handle this problems is probably 7000 miles north (USA). I will appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Carlos

As I recall, the odometer is a seperate part...A self contained motor driven mechanism that operates from 12 volts and pulses from the speedometer circuit.
Obviously it will not work if the spedo quit, loss of power to it or a mechanical problem in the odometer itself.

Hi, my '87 Aspencade had odometer problem for years. I took the dash apart and replaced the step motor that runs the mechanical odometer with 4 different motors with no success. Ended up replacing LCD display that I purchased on EBay. Everything works fine now. Hope this helps.
