Timing Belt for GL1200

Post by jeffers » Mon Mar 02, 2015 11:39 pm

Hey all!!! I have a question on timing belts for a 86' 1200 aspencade... Looking to find out what is the best brand of belts to install and if anyone has the part numbers for them? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Just don't want to put junk parts on my baby... Thanks, Jeff

Check out the [ur=viewtopic.php?f=19&t=6742]Cross Reference part number[/url] post for stuff like this. It shows for your bike:

GL1200
Gates - #5043 or #T070 (2 ea.)
NAPA - #250070 (2 ea.)
Goodyear - #40070 (2 ea.)

I would go with any of the above, or, if you feel like paying twice the price for the same thing, an OEM Honda belt. Do not buy no-name belts, or belts made in China, or pretty much anything at all from Saber Cycle. :)

I would also go with the Gates belts. the reason being is that my wife's car had to have a new timing belt put on when she first got the car back in 1999 with under 350 miles on it,(replaced under warrantee), and a few months ago just had the belt replaced again, only this time the car had 136,000 miles on it. that should give you some kind of an idea of how long a Gates belt lasts. I wouldn't hesitate to use them on my 83 aspy.

You can buy Gates T070 belts at rockauto.com for $6.75 each. I don't think you'll find a better price. Good luck!

I just replaced my belts with Gates from Rock Auto on my 85 with only 25k mi. only because of time not miles, old belts looked brand new, if I was like many others I could sell them on E-Bay but then have to know someone might bust there engine because of it, not worth it, I like peace of mind. You are on the best Wing site there is, Welcome.

I recently changed belts on my 86 Honda and went with the NAPA belt mentioned earlier. The counter person told me there that gates makes NAPA belts, however, the cost was $14.99 each as opposed to the much cheaper price at RockAuto.

I replace my timing belts every three years or 25k miles whichever comes first.
On an automobile engine they can go 100k because the engines do not rev as fast or as much as the typical bike. It is just good insurance that you won't scatter your engine or worse lock it up at highway speeds, which could be dangerous. Also look at the belt tensioner idler assemblies as the springs get weak over time.

The other thing that a lot of places won't tell you, is that Gates belts are lifetime warranty. Not completely sure that it applies to timing belts but worth checking into.

Dayco P/N 95070 are another belt to put on your list.
