Bought new Avon Tires

Postby tbeiler » Thu Mar 12, 2015 11:32 am

86 Aspencade and thought I would get a jump on getting a new set of tires, so its ready for the road once the good weather hits. Got the Avon Venom 150/90B15 rear and the Avon Cobra MT 90B16 front from Petes superbike in Quebec. Got them delivered to my house in Ontario in 3 days, talk about great service.
Only problem is the rear has a pretty major deformation around the bead where it would meet the rim. Both sides of the tire have some deformation, a little less on the side that's not shown. Anyone know if this a real concern or am I being overly critical.

From the picture,it wasn't made that way..it kinda looks like something hit it hard enough to deform it.The next question would be if there is unseen damage to the sidewall.
Personally...I wouldn't even unrap it.
Contact the delivery persons for a damage claim and get them returned or replaced.

I'd find myself a new supplier...Sorry this happened to you... They should know better than to send out something like that.. Maybe they will make it right.... :D

Its possible it didn't come from the supplier this way.The "handler" may have damaged it in shipping.

It almost looks like it was strapped there to another tire with a nylon strap. Either that, or something heavy rested on it for a while.

In either case, I would not likely put it on my bike.

I emailed Petes Superbike, they got back to me next day. They requested the manufacture date which happened to be 2612 (26th week of 2012), so they can open a claim. So far nothing but good service from them.
Can't help think that someone had to see the defect. It is on both sides of the tire with one side worse shown in the picture. Both front and rear tires were bound together with tape, and still are now. This tells me that the tire was damaged before shipment and not as a result of the shipping itself. Shame on whoever packaged these babies up.
I'll wait and see how they pull through with the new tire replacement before I give them a recommendation.

I agree that it looks like banding material of some kind made the dent. If it were me, and I weren't in a hurry, I'd place them in a warm place to see if the dent would return to normal dimensions. I believe it will straighten back out and be okay, but don't take my word for it.
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

I would like to know the date on the front tire, from the looks of the picture, the damaged tire is nice and shiny and the front is dull looking as most new tires are. The damage could not have been done while it was shrink wraped to the front tire as it would also damage the front tire's outside bead but there would be no damage to the inside bead as it is protected by the other tire. My opinion is the damaged tire was returned to the seller a long time ago and has been re wraped with a new front tire and sold to recover coast that the factory refused to accept, the tire is almost 3 years old, where has it been? I would not put that tire on my bike and would not accept a 3 year old tire in the first place, the seller should take it back without question and I would not buy from them again. Just my opinion and we all have one, mine could be wrong. Good luck.

Right you are winger3, the date on the front is 2214 (22nd week of 2014), and yes the rear is shiny and the front is more dull. Wow, I guess a picture is worth a thousand words. Good catch.
Yes the seller has already ordered a new tire after I provided the date of manufacture of 2912, (I think I originally said 2612), but have yet to hear when the replacement tire will be shipped. I'll post once I get more news on the replacement.

So. FedEx picked up old tire and delivered a new one without damage yesterday.
I emailed Pete's Superbike that I would not accept an aged tire before new one came.
Sure enough the tire arrived when I wasn't available and the manufacture date on new tire is 2912.
Petes Superbike emailed back and said that 2912 is not an old tire, and he has no control over what the supplier ships to him.
Well, at least the tire is free of defects, and I think it will have to do.
Lesson learned, buyer beware.
