84 1200 Interstate exhaust gasket question

Postby superbill » Mon Mar 16, 2015 7:17 pm

Hi to everyone on this board. This is my first time posting and have a few questions on what I think is an exhaust gasket question. My new to me 84 Interstate started a small drip of oil right under the right hand exhaust. In the picture that I hope will post properly, it drips down the second bolt from the left. Very small, just a drop or two after I started her up for the first time this year after hibernating for the winter.

My questions are these: according to the parts fiche, it looks like each exhaust has a single gasket that looks like an o ring, for lack of a better description. Is the fix for this drip to drop the exhaust and replace these circular gaskets? Is there anything else involved in this procedure, as it looks pretty straight forward, that I should be on the look out for? Any tips I need to know about?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Are you sure the valve cover isn't leaking above it and running down.
Yes the exhaust gasket is a metal cooper ring for each cylinder.

I'm pretty sure it's not the valve cover gasket. I know the picture looks like there's oil there but I checked that area and it's just dirty... no oil there. So I just need to drop the exhausts and replace those gaskets then?

Thanks for the help

im gonna stick my neck out on this one....there should be NO engine oil coming out of the exhaust ports unless there's an internal engine problem, IE: cracked head letting the oil seep past the head and down into the exhaust pipes, or valve cover gasket, or the valve cover itself. I enlarged your pic up to 250% and it looks like you might have a few hair line cracks in the bottom of that valve cover AND a oil leak directly in the middle of the bottom side of it just above and inbetween both exhaust tubes. replacing the header gaskets isn't going to solve this problem. personally if it were my bike, I would take the valve cover off, clean it inside and out with brake cleaner or a degreaser, check for any surface cracks in it and replace the valve cover, (if in fact it is cracked) and replace the valve cover gasket anyway just to be on the safe side. in my opinion, that's what I would do if it were my bike.

and with this posting, im logging off for the night. have a good nite yawl..........CLICK

Thanks for your reply Stuart. I guess I'll be taking a lot closer look at everything in that area before I go buying any gaskets. I'll do a major clean job and go from there. Again, thanks for your help.
