GL1200 carbs problem

Postby lion75 » Sat Mar 21, 2015 5:14 pm

Hello everybody, i just bought 1984 GL1200.
The most important thing i want to fix is carbs problem. Engine starts and runs good, i just have strong smell of fuel ! At a poit when i stop with engine still runing my eyes start to burn.
I manage to do about 110miles on full fuel tank
Which dsnt sound normal.
Do i have to run and buy rebuild kit or is it easier?

Could you have a leak? When the bike run clean, Does it not sound like a karborator problem. I can run around 400 km on a tank.

Altough i didnt hear other GL1200 to compare the sound i think that it sound smooth and stable. Is the and indication soundwise to carb issue?
Wish i could stay away from gas station for 400km...

Your not getting exhaust going up when sitting are you?Do you leave the gas on when not riding wondering if you have a sticking carb float...Maybe they just need a good cleaning Ill come over and do it,some day!!!!

I had that for about 6 months ... not so bad that my eyes watered , but at slow speeds I always smelled gas . Always !!

When I finally gave up and had a pro Shade tree mechanic re-build my carbs ... he told me that one carb needle/float was occasionally hanging up ...
.. but the thing that made the real difference was the so-called "Slow air Valve "

After 30 years it was brittle and dry .... and he replaced it.
Since then , no gas smell and about 8000 happy Kilometers.

You might be able to " cure " a hanging needle valve with many applications of Seafoam... but the slow air valve requires re and re.

thank you all ! appreciate your help.
So there is no way to run away from it, i will have to take the carbs
a part and check it up. As i thought, it wasnt the 50k miles (70k km)
that helped the carbs get "older" but the 31 years....
