Postby mikegrames » Sat Jun 19, 2010 6:39 pm

I just bought the bike and the head lights go from brite to dim as you go down the road and always dim when appyling the brakes. Any ideas would be helpful thanks

Has somebody put a "Headlight Modulator" on it. That would explain the high/low sequence.

Sounds like you may have a problem with your charging system. The 1200s were famous for the stator going bad.You should check the output of the charging system and also the wiring from the stator to the rectafier. There was a connector on the three wires that would get corrison on them and would not let it charge properly & would burn out the stator. Most people hard wire the three wires together & sodier the connections. Just my 2-cents. Hope this helps

Thanks for the input the bikes batt. stays charged and starts every time.Could you tell me where I would find the wires from stator to the rectafier and what a head light modulator looks like and also location and would it cause the dimming when appling the brakes ? Thanks I Like the bike and would like to make sure thing are right on it.

Sounds like Peppyone might be on the money. I know on the 83's if you look just ahead of the battery mounted on the frame are electrical connections. These are the stator wires, yellow. You won't miss them. If these connectors are bad this will cause the problems. What the fix has been is to cut the plugs out and spice the wires back together. As far as a headlight modulator these devices are small enough the be inside the headlight housing. There is (If installed correctly) a photo sensor mounted up in the fairing somewhere. What this does is to force the headlight to low beam when there is insufficient light ,nightime or when you go through a tunnel. From what you are describing it might be as Peppyone

Have a look at this topic for the stator connector: Three yellow wires

I checked the three yellow wires they were already spliced. Could it be the voltage regulator going bad? Would you have anymore ideas thanks

Is the "dim bright dim" rythmic? If it has a modulator it is supposed the do that during the day.

No there is no pattern to it but seems to do it more on the high beams than when its on low beam. And always dims when applying the brakes.

Almost certain it is a ground problem.
