86-A speed sensor

Postby Mooseman » Sat Jun 19, 2010 10:35 pm

OK, i have a question for you guru's. I pulled the engine and replaced the stator. Reinstalled the engine, got everything hooked up, went for a test ride. No speedometer reading. Just "O". Pulled it back in and figured I missed something. Nope every thing was reatached and went somewhere. Lifted the front wheel, turned on the key and gave the wheel a spin. Huston we have speed readings. Back for a test ride NADA. Front wheel spin on the jack we have a working speedo. Another test ride and it works for about 1 mile and back to zero and remains there.
Put the volt meter to the t 3 prong plug as the book says and I get maybe 1.?? volt and then below 1 volt. Intermitent. Sometime it reads nothing.
SOOOOOO, is this a bad sensor? Or did I knock a wire loose somewhere that I havn't found. I've looked under the coils and every thing looks good.
I did open up the sensor and some of the glue or stuff they fill it with was all bubbled up. I have a picture.
Searching part numbers only the 85-A and 86-A have the same sensor part numbrer.
Any ideas befor I order a new one?
Thanks, Mooseman

Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

Trace the cable to a plug on the left side under the false tanks

Disconnect the speed sensor from the speedometer
gearbox at the front wheel.
Connect a voltmeter across the Black/Brown and
Black/Yellow terminals of the sensor white 3-P coupler.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
The sensor is normal if the voltmeter needle swings from
0 to about 5 slowly eight times when the sensor drive
shaft is turned slowly one full turn.

tricky,
Thanks for the info. I did do that and that is where I got the 1 volt reading. SOOOOOO, am thinking the sensor went bad and it was just a fluk that it happened during my stator change.
Thanks again, Mooseman
