GL1100 CARB ON A 1200 ?

Postby Blackness » Tue Mar 31, 2015 5:47 pm

Hello guys..

Im hoping someone may be able to help with my dilemma...

I recently bought my first Goldwing, a 86 GL1200 Interstate, imported to the UK from the States in 1989.

I bought it as a little project as it needs a bit of love really. Its a bit shabby but will clean up. The engine has done 54,000 miles, so should be all good there, but wasn't running great. A few bits weren't working like the temp gauge, and i wasn't happy with the water circulation so i thought id pull a few bits off and check her out before i attempt to start using her..
The temp sensor was the issue with not knowing how hot she was, so changed that. Wasn't happy with how the water pump was feeling, so changed that, and the thermostat while i was at it.
Now, heres where it got interesting... The fuel pump has been replaced with an aftermarket Facet one. I ordered new carb kits and stripped and cleaned the carbs and then noticed the new rubber gaskets were wrong !
On doing a bit of searching i have found these are GL1100 carbs and air inlet manifolds !?

I hoping someone may be able to shine a light as to why someone might do this ? Is it good, or bad ?

Thank you for any help in advance.

Regards G

Hmm, strange. Are you sure you ordered the correct kit? Maybe link to where you bought it from and post some pics, please?
Do your carbs look like this

or this

Hi mate.

My carbs are the ones in the second photo (just not as shiny) ! Ive double checked with the parts diagram on a honda site and they aren't off any 1200 i can find..
Was hoping someone was gonna say it was a mod for better running or more power, but don't think I'm gonna get that response ;)

Ive just ordered a complete carb from the States from an 85 GL1200 so hopefully that will sort that issue out !

As to why someone would do it...your guess is as good as anyone else's. Perhaps the original carbs were damaged? Dirty? Needed overhaul and they had a set of GL1100 carbs at hand? There's no accounting for decisions made by previous owners. :)
