84 GL 1200 Stator and timing

Postby shadow1k9 » Tue Mar 31, 2015 6:40 pm

Hi have a problem, would like some help. 1984 GL 1200 A (not that the A matters) timing issue. I am replacing the stator, got to the point of removing the rear case and it seems the washer nut that hold the flywheel/alt unscrewed itself which in turn let the flywheel move into the stator housing, damaging the three screws that hold the stator in place. When pulling the lower case off the flywheel (a rotating magnet), come with the stator. The problem is within the flywheel, there are three small casters that stick out about 1/6 inch, blocking the unit from going back on it's shaft. Any ideas? The next problem will be the engine and right timing pulley have moved, rotated somewhat, so will it matter as far as timing as long as I line up all the timing marks again. Thanks

Are you talking about the rollers in the starter clutch? I've never been inside a 1200 but I'm sure it's pretty similar to the 1000 and 1100. here's a vid made by our very own Aussiegold showing his way of doing it. If it's something else, sorry, no clue

Thank you so much, yes the rollers, just give it a little turn.. As far as the bolt heads in the stator, I'll grind them off the then use vice grips the remove the bolt shafts, and replace with new bolts. Again thank you..great video Aussiegold.

He uses the plate "B" though instead of Old Fogey's recommendation to replace it with two standard plates.
