Wow, that's horrendous! An obvious question, but is there enough oil in that engine?

The smoke was from oil running down the exhaust while the value cover was off and the engine running. The book I have says it is a know problem. It said to center the spacer between the exhaust rocker arms. That helped, it was louder. Somebody on here must have heard it before. Just looking for the right person.

Thanks

Forgot to say how it started. Came home one day and everything was fine. Started it up the next morning and the noise was there. That is all there is to it.

Yes, often times the gasket leaks oil and drips onto the exhaust causing smoking,, have you taken the cover off the head.? I mean to have a look.. Is it making that noise on both sides or just one side?

Yes, Just to see where the noise is coming from. It is from the front right cylinder. I have taken off the heads to view inside the cylinders on both side. No sign of anything. Put it back together and the noise was still there. It started literally over night. Came home and parked it and everything was fine. Started it up the next morning and the sound was there just like that. The bike only has 28000 miles on it.

Still looking

I suggest that you take a good hard look at the hydraulic valve lifters. Sounds like one won't pump up as it should.

Yes, had all of them out and cleaned and bleed them. Today after about 7 hours of starting, looking, listening, feeling, and taking things apart the noise has went away. I had made a shield so I could run it without the valve cover on it and figured out it wasn't coming from the valve train. I put my finger on all the parts of the valve train and didn't feel the tap there. I ran it up to 5500 RPMs a couple of times and ran it pretty hard on the stand. That might have cleared it out. It is quiet for now.

Great to hear it quit making noise, I, like flash42, thought the lifter was plugged with some crud and colllapsed and needed to be cleaned/blowen out. Back in the late 50's & 60's the oil did not clean like today and lifters where always getting cloged with sludge and needed to be cleaned, sounded just like what I heard on youtube. Maybe you need to run some seafoam thru it and get it realy cleaned out. Ride safe.

When my hydraulic lifters would stick and click in my pickup,, a mechanic friend told me to use super unleaded fuel, sure enough it made the clicking stop,, but it was just a slight click, nothing like yours... So glad you got that noise gone... +1 on the seafoam idea....Some use that magical Marvel stuff, whatever it is..
