Bottoms out?

Postby sportsfreaked » Thu Apr 16, 2015 6:37 pm

I searched the term bottoms out and well you can imagine what popped up :). When I have a passenger on the 1985 Special Edition it seems to me like it's bottoming out. If you hit a bump you hear a loud thud from the rear. I have the air pressure at 50 psi according to the onboard reading. Is this normal or do I need shock work? Thanks Ed

No, it's not normal, should never bottom out like that,,, my 1100 did that and I finally got sick of those air shocks and bought the progressive 412's, never had a problem since....But I think they can be rebuilt.... :D that's a 1200 so it's a different monkey..

So looking at parts it looks like all I will need is according to mother Honda's rear shock diagram is 12,14,15, and 24 correct? The 7,8,9,10, and 11should all be reusable correct? As always thanks for the knowledge. Ed

It could be a number of things. Is the spring worn out? Is the correct amount of fluid in the shock? The fluid is what damps the shock's movement - if the shock was leaking, and all (or most) of the fluid has leaked out, the end result will be bottoming out every time you hit a big bump.

I have decided that I am going to just rebuild both shocks and put progressive springs in. Littlebeaver and I are going to do it together and put together a supply list and a how to for the site.

No. I haven't done it yet. Life got in the way as usual. I might just buy some Progressive shocks but haven't decided yet.

Understandable. I'm on the fence about this, too.
Progressives are looking pretty good in terms of downtime.
