87 1200a starter removel

is starter removel same as 1100, can be removed and replaced with-out engine removel? I rebuilt starter on 1100i a year ago, I think my 1200a is needing it done as well. I still don't know i weather I might have to pull engine or not for another problem yet, I might have a bad stator, could be battery, got to check an see, my luck, the stator will be bad! If I must pull engine, I am going to replace clutches too, just because engine is out. I just hate the thought of working inside of metel building here on Gulf coast with heat index of 110 and higher........but, got to do what I must do.

I seem to remember that yes, it can be taken out the same way, but a little bit more needs to be removed to allow it to fit - I *think* it was the shifter lever and dropping the left exhaust from the manifold, but my memory might be wrong. Someone will be along shortly who does know, I'm sure.

I have the engine guard and the exhaust about to drop, and I know the gearshift lever needs to be removed, came in to cool off, looks like to ease everything, the right side guards and exhaust has to be dropped as well
