Last year I bought a used 85 GL1200 Interstate.
I have replaced the Normal stuff, Tires, Oil, Checked wheel Bearings.
When I take it on the highway, it will start to whine. I can change speed, pull in the clutch, change gears but it wont stop.
The only time it will stop making the sound is when I stop moving. My guess is it starts at about 60 MPH, then will not stop until I stop at a light or exit.
This makes it very hard to detect where the sound is coming from.
It sounds like a bushing on a fan that has gone bad.
Let me know if anyone has an Idea?

Re: Noise while moving.
This may not be the culprit, but I have had a set of tires whine. Does yours change with speed or always the same? Mine changed with speed.

Re: Noise while moving.
I have just had the tires replaced, but it made the noise with both sets.
Also, Stays the same when i speed up or slow down.
I just went for a ride, and it made the noise for a brief moment when I started it.
Then stopped.
Still Wondering.

Unhook the spedo cable from the front tire and test again.

Great Idea, virgilmobile wrote:Unhook the spedo cable from the front tire and test again.
But I don't think this will help, because now it will make the noise for about 1 second then stop, when I start the engine.
I am just guessing here but may be a tensioner, or fan bearing, or some other type of bushing.
It sound like its from the front of the motor.

Timing belts are my next repair.
They seem fine but the tensioners could be causing the noise.
Thanks for the comments.
