NO SPEEDOMETER! 1985 GL1200 (Digital Speedo)

Postby Wingman24 » Fri May 01, 2015 9:06 am

:| The Speedometer has not worked since I got it. But I have removed the sensor and replaced after a little cleaning (original, not a new one)

Did not seem to be broken...

Any ideas?? I use a cell phone with GPS/Speedometer app that works well, but, all the computer stuff on the bike will not work if the speedometer is not operating.

So, I am a DIY kind of guy, so I want to fix it... as in-expensively as possible....

What shall I try ? :geek:

the common culprit is usually the plastic gears stripping in the speedo gearbox. take the sensor off, and you should see a small flat drive, sticking out of the hole in the gearbox, that the sensor sits over. Jack the wheel off the ground, and turn the wheel, you should see the drive turn. if it doesn't the gears are stripped.

Complete OEM gearboxes are still available at the OEM parts through cyclemax just the gears are not available.

If the gear is still good, the sensor would be next, that would not be inexpensive though.
