Weak Points in GL1200 to Look Out For?

Postby StrongEagle » Mon May 04, 2015 10:14 am

I used to ride Valkyries... I sold my last one in Singapore in 2012 before I came back to the US. I'm thinking I want something not quite as large and heavy as the Valkyrie and have started looking at GL1200's as an alternative.

I've found some nice looking bikes on craigslist... before I go to look at them, I'd like to know if there are specific points to check out that might be more prone to failure or require more maintenance to keep in order... for example, rear splines going dry on the Valk are sometimes a source of issues.

Any and all tips appreciated. I've seen a great looking 85 cherry red interstate.

My last ride is posted in the pic.

TIA

My 1200 was in very poor condition.
Charging problems to resolve. Not really to expensive or time consuming if caught before the stator gets cooked.
Look at the "3 yellow wires".
A fair bit of work on the carbs from neglect.Replacing the fork seals and bushings was 4 hours.
Timing belts replaced...just because.
The fuel pump was a issue.Just fixed it up or can be replaced.
Really no trouble areas other than needing a complete service before putting it on the road.
Same as usual. All the fluids and greasing. Some new rubber.a good carb sync.

I would also look at the various models within the group as the packages can differ greatly.

Thanks. I was reading the info at the link provided by schoenthal, and indeed, only the LTD had fuel injection, not the interstate, nor the aspencade. How about in later years, 86 and 87, when the LTD was dropped. Were these models still carb aspirated?

And, for curiosity's sake... with this being a first year injection system, any issues with programming/mapping that have had to be taken care of?

A nice write up of the Goldwing history with pics: http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/modelhis ... -Page1.htm

I hope I'm not violating protocol by posting an article from a Irish forum: http://www.goldwingfacts.com/used1200.htm
