Electrical Issue - Smoking the fusible link

Postby AnOtherOleGoat » Sun May 10, 2015 8:25 pm

My first Gold Wing - 1985 gl1200l - has an electrical issue burning the fuse on the starter solenoid - I took all the fuses out turned on the switch one by one replaced them - the issue seems to be coming from the 15 amp CFI, cruise, height control. Does not get as hot (I turn on the switch touching the fuse to feel if it gets hot, as it heated I would turn it off and cool the fuse) before I start it as it does after it's fired and running, once running it only takes about 4 second to burn the fuse. It runs good till the fuse burns, then the throttle has strange response, gauges act crazy. It runs (badly) once running and fuse burns, I turn it off and to restart I need to replace the fuse. This has also melted some of the plastic on the starter solenoid, don't think the solenoid is hurt.

Personally I didn't trust the dog bone fuse on mine.I cut both red wires and attached a large wire standard fuseholder with a 30 amp blade fuse direct to the battery cable stud on the solenoid. Not the mini fuse, the standard.
If the bike isn't blowing the 15 amp fuse for the ignition ,the problem must be at the original fuse. When it does go bad,the bike is trying to run off the charging system.Very erratic voltage.

Thanks for the reply
I traced the issue to the 15 amp fuse that goes to the CFI, Cruise and height control. Is there some sound that the height control, like a pump sound of something like that. I have not heard anything that result in air movement. (plumber by trade sounds are a big thing in plumbing)

Ok.i got the impression that you have a problem in that circuit and have narrowed it to the air compressor not making air compressor noise like it's seized and drawing a bunch of power Blowing the fuse....This makes sense that the compressor would try to operate to "auto level" the bike if it has that feature....Easiest way to find out is unplug the compressor.

Again Thanks
But where is that little dude. No sound and can't see where a pump would be.

I think I found the compressor at the right knee. Unplugged it, turned on the switch nothing acted crazy, hit the go button fired and died when I let off.
I can say to this that the fusible link did not burn.
This thing is crazy, is there another inline fuse from the starter solenoid. I feel like the switched power to the engine goes off when I let off the start button.

Interesting indeed.Take your test probe and see if the 2big red wires have power with the key off.Thats the main 30 amp fuse link straight to the battery connection.

I found a schematic that may help...just follow the wires like plumbing.
It's about the same thing

I just try to keep up on fixing stuff. My own and anybody else where I can help.
The more details about a problem, the easier it is to isolate the trouble area.
It's all about test results and the next test.
It can take more than just one poke at it to fix it.
Keep us informed on how it goes and if you need more information or ideas.

OK: Grand is a Grad now back to Papaw's stuff
I push the starter button and it starts right up, let off the starter button and it dies, I think it dropping the power to the engine when I let off the started button.
So I took the readings at the fuse box switch on and off Took them at the top of the fuse.
Switch off:
Fuses 1-6 - 13.39
7 - 12.03
8 - .01
9-11 - 12.39
Switch on
1-2 - .51
3 - 12.12
4-5 - .50
6 - .42
7 - 11.72
8 - .38
9-11 - 12.12
I tried to find all the plugs I can, none seem to be loose.
Could this be a bad relay

I'll get into the schematics but it sounds like a bad ignition switch.

Thanks for the reply I'm sorry I haven't been more aggressive in my due diligence, one of my employees and a good friends, wife try to commit suicide. Things have been a little tough. But she seems OK but is going through psych evaluation.
I'm checking the ignition today switch was trying to get to it, Man what a spot.
Again thanks

Thanks for all the help!
I've replaced the dog bone fuses the one at the starter relay with a water tight fuse case and the one on the white wire with a automatic circuit breaker, soldered and shrink wrapped that. have gone through as many plugs as I have found.
I did put another ground wire from the battery to the bike ground.
Had the switch out and cleaned, checked everything and starting the reinstall.

The manual you sent a screen shot of the electrical is there some place I can get a copy. Most of what I have found is not that user friendly.

Dennis
