Accessory terminal leaks .43 volts when off?

Postby lovat » Wed May 20, 2015 1:28 pm

On my new to me '86 1200 Interstate, the accessory terminal measures .43 volts when the key is out.
Is this something to worry about?
There isn't any radio, or cd, or intercom, or anything on this bike.

I'm going to install an auto radio, so I have something.
And I'm a ham so that will eventually go in there too, but for now, I'm worried about drainage when its off.

Thank you,
Greg

Interesting - it would depend on from where the leak is coming. My first guess would be the ignition switch - dielectric grease, full of carbon and/or metallic particles, creating a small resistive bridge across contacts. Spray it out with contact cleaner, that might take care of it.

I would try measuring current from the accessory terminal positive to ground - a dead short through the meter - when the ignition is OFF. You might have .43 volts potential, but microamperes available current, which means the leak is so small that it is irrelevant.

Thanks!
I'll clean the switch and then not worry about it.

Thank you!
