Engine won't turn over

Postby Bigfish05 » Sat May 23, 2015 7:23 pm

I have a 1985 Aspencade 1200. I just replaced the stator, starter solenoid, starter and regulator/rectifier. I put everything back together and the engine started put I wasn't getting any charging of the battery. I sent the rectifier back and now the starter tries to turn the motor over but I just burned up the starting solenoid. Sounds like the motor doesn't want to turn.
Any suggestions on where to go from here?

Are you saying that now the engine will not turn over at all?
If so,it may be hydrolocked.Pull all 4 plugs and try again. If there's gas in a cylinder, expect it to be ejected violently out.It can shoot 20 feet and is flamable so no spark.Kill the ignition.

If the motor did start and run after you replaced all the items, but now it won't start and "fried" the solenoid, I would be taking the plugs out as suggested by "virgilmobile", and definitely have the main switch set to OFF on the handlebar.

How long did it run for when you put it back together - a couple of seconds - or did it run normally for a few minutes - hopefully with no strange noises.

if your starter is trying to turn the motor with one or more cylinders full of fuel it could be putting a huge amount of strain on several engine components - so take the plugs out.

Thanks for the feedback. When I get the new solenoid I will pull the plugs and try that.
To be continued

It does happen.Seemingly for no reason either.Mine did this out of the blue one day.It did set on the side stand with the gas still turned on for 2 days.
After that hoorah,I started shutting off the fuel when I was done for the day's riding.Just like it suggests in the owners manual.Who woulda guesses.
