Poor fuel mileage

Postby filupsd » Tue May 26, 2015 8:41 pm

Have a 1984 naked bike and I am getting terrible mileage according to what I've seen here. I am getting about 25 mpg. Had the carbs synced this spring and though there was some adjustment needed it wasn't much. Didn't help. Hat other things should I look at? I think my mechanic likes to set the mixture to the rich side but would it affect mpg that much?

The other issue is lag when accelerating. It happens when I am cruising along at 3600rpm then pass someone. Here a stutter until around 4000rpm
Thanks,

Poor compression (expect at least 135) or a stuck slide...use a mirror in the plenum box,rap the throttle...be sure all 4 rise about half way up then drop closed at a idle...Float level off...even a couple of mm. makes a difference...
Pull all 4 plugs for inspection(when you do the compression test with the throttle wide open and the ignition killed)..post a picture of them..They tell a bunch about how efficiently your burning fuel...
How's your battery volts holding at 3000 rpm...is it 14 to 14.4 volts?Ya need lots of volts to keep it sparking really healthy.

Something you can check by yourself...After you've ridden it,pull to a stop...leave it in neutral...can you easily push the bike...it should roll with little effort.
Just checking if the brakes are dragging.
