New horns -- how do I wire in the relay?

Postby Write2Paul90277 » Thu May 28, 2015 5:46 pm

Hi folks,

I bought a pair of electric horns (NOT air horns) for my 84 GL1200 and plan to mount them using the existing wiring to the original left and right horns.

But how and where do I add the RELAY that came with the horns? The idea is to use the stock horn button, but to use the provided relay so the new (louder) horns don't melt any wiring or blow fuses.

Has anyone done this? Did you take pictures? Maybe have a wiring diagram? (All the diagrams I can find online are "universal" fit, not specific to a Goldwing.)

Thanks in advance,

Paul

The original horn has 2 wires, connect them to the relay terminals that are parallel. In your picture, there the left and right terminals
..Take a 15 amp fused (#14 or better a #12) wire from the battery post and attach it to either of the 2 connections left...the last connection from the relay goes to the new horn.If the new horn also has 2 terminals, you need to add a wire to it and ground it to the frame.
The idea is to use the original wiring to just click the relay and let the relay pass the big power to the new horn.
you only need one relay attached to one set of horn wires, the other pair is not used...If there is a second new horn being installed, also ground wire it and attach the other terminal to the same place as the first horn.
I used this method in wiring a pair of horns from a 80's F150 truck...absolutly awesome sounding....

Thanks virgilmobile. My biggest challenge now will be finding where to tap into the (green?) wire that leads down from the horn button. I'm guessing that the relay will need to be mounted in the fairing pocket somewhere.

Anyone have pics of how you mounted the relay?

Ride Safe,

Paul

Wait...What???..The wire from the horn button is right there at the horn....One wire is 12 volts with the key on and the other goes to ground when you push the horn button.
You want to replace both old wimpy horns with that one new relay....When you push the horn button,it will make the relay go "click"....Use the switch part of the relay to power the robust, power hungry horns..
Unplug the 2 wires from one horn..either one...Take those two wires and attach them directly to the relay terminals...the left and right ones....You can wire tie the relay anywhere you can fit it.
unplug the other horn and tape off the wire connections...they will not be used...
Mount and wire both new horns to one relay contact and there ground if needed...the other relay terminal goes to the battery.....
Kapish..

By the way...the extra old wires from the other horn....I hooked a relay to that one on mine....I use it to trigger the air horn of my 100 watt siren. The gets there attention..Now I just wanna figure a way to pipe in a mp3 track of a cruise ship horn ..Boy...talk about.

Got it, virgilmobile. Your explanation and wiring diagram are much appreciated. I sometimes have a way of turning a simple job into a full-blown NASA mission.

Paul

No problem..I do suggest that first you unhook both horns and attach the relay...turn on the key and push the horn button...confirm the relay clicks when the button is pushed. Then just finish the big wires and mounting...
