1200 engine clean up

Postby jdtetoit » Sat May 30, 2015 8:56 pm

So I made my list of O rings, seals and gaskets today and I was wondering if anyone has a source for a complete set instead of ordering everything individually.

I just did mine and I found no full sets. I ordered chemical resistant from McMaster carr and some from southern powersports. I just went down the parts list and ordered everything available from southern and filled in the rest with McMaster. Kind of a pain but if you have it out, do it right and spend the time to get it all.

Oh I intend to get them all. I printed out all the various sheets with their parts list and sat down at the motor and started checking things off. Kinda looks like my water pump was due to fail soon so saved that disaster from happening.

While the clutch friction plates check out at the top of the spec and there is less than 2 thousands difference from different points I'm debating replacing them while its out. The question is will the new plates be garbage compared to the originals

I think you may as well change the discs, mine checked good but as long as engine was out, it's going to need it someday anyway. The part I want to find is the diaphram spring, yours will be probably good (in spec) but not by alot.
I also bought all new bolts for the front and rear covers as well as final drive gear cover, water jackets, intake manifolds, whatever I could get, it really does make it look good and they don't cost much.
Just a couple things to think about and best of luck with the project.

My she sure looks pretty all cleaned up, I have been in love with this bike since the day they came out. Somewhere in an odd box I bet I still have the original flyer they put out back in 1984.

Good luck with the spring, I've been looking for about a year & haven't found a source for a "new" one. Trying to get prepared for a rebuild of the clutch.

The only thing missing is the spring, have everything else. I'd rather not tear into till I have all the stuff

No wife, just a small business and three bikes to keep me busy.

1500 gets a going over first then this starts.
