1985 GL 1200 Limited Idle

Post by Jen7222 » Thu Jul 01, 2010 9:52 am

Can anyone tell me how to adjust the idle on a 1985 GL 1200.
It has the EFI fuel system and the idle runs at around 1300 rpm which seems to high. When I first got the bike it idled around 1040 to 1100 rpm. I do not know why it is running faster but it is.
Thank you

If your familiar with the non-FI models the adjuster screw is sort of in the same area but hidden by added hoses. You'll need the same type of flat blade screwdriver as the other ones take but you'll want a flashlight to find it.

Another thing about the idle... it's really common for the throttle plates to get dirty and need to be cleaned out. This effects the plate sync. Its fairly easy to do... remove the air filter cover and the filter. Using some spray carb cleaner with a long small hose attached spray into the intake while the engine is running at @ 3k rpm. You'll want to make sure it's in a very well ventilated area because the exhaust is NASTY. It's typical for the engine to want to die while doing this so blip the throttle to keep it going.

2 cans should do it... spray into all 4 intake ports; 2 on each side.
