valve clatter

Postby 7thsoncj » Wed Jun 17, 2015 4:42 pm

I just changed the cam seals on a gl1200 and it was pretty straight forward, fired right up, ran smooth, but... with one horrific clatter on the r side, which is the one that was leaking. I've double checked the cam timing several times and it is correct, belts are in good shape. can anyone shed some light on this problem?

Maybe a collapsed hydraulic lifter? Just a guess, don't know of a test to verify, would be rare.

Yea, I found the rear cyl. intake stuck. Not sure if the piston bent the valve or not, but I'm just replacing the head as I was given one anyway. Just waiting on the gasket. I'll let you know what I find when I pull that head off.

In times past, when I've had engines apart for "major" work... and I wanted to be sure that I didn't screw anything up before the initial run... I'f often turned the engine over with the coil wire out and or plugs pulled... long enough at least to make sure I've got good oil pressure and everything sounds a-okay before letting her rip...

I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.
