Popping noise

Postby Doughboy17 » Fri Jun 19, 2015 8:26 am

I have a mechanical question I noticed this morning that I have acquired a popping or clicking noise on the right side of my 84 GL 1200 Interstate. Would like to know exactly what is located beside my chrome carb cover to the left. It's Chrome to, and round not real big. It looks like some sort of selinoid to me. Can anyone please tell me what it is and why it may have started clicking or popping. It's speeds up when I go faster and slows down

If this part is on the right side, its a pulse fuel pump.It pulses once about every 8-10 at a idle and will increase as the rpm increases(fuel demand).
If it's starting to tick, its time to do something about it.Normally, there's a rubber dampening ring inside to keep the noise to just a thump. As it deteriorates,it allows the piston to strike the metal insides. Its also possible that it can suddenly jam and stop the bike.Search "ticking fuel pump".Theres lots to read.

There is no rebuild kit..I just did it myself with a piece of rubber hose....just to see if it could be done...
I can't seem to get the "search" part to work..there's a bunch of information about replacing and repairing it on this site...
If it can be found.

My 1200 started that on the road one afternoon about thirty miles from Amarillo. In downtown Amarillo it quit completely. I fitted an automotive pump from an Autozone a few bolocks away from where I was stuck. That was about four years ago and it's still on the bike.

Is this what you are looking for?

My pump can be heard at 60 MPH.Tick..Tick..Not only a bit annoying, but a sign of impending failure?

I found it in the 1200 DIY sub forum.
