headlight adjustment

Postby wilmo » Tue Jun 30, 2015 1:17 pm

On my 86 aspencade, there is the up.down adjusting wheel on the dash. I'm a little doubtful that it works so I got into the headlight assembly today. While spinning the knob, there is a gear that indeed turns with it, this is good. However, while turning it up or down it does not appear to be moving anything. Keep in mind I'm doing this during the day in my driveway without the light on because I wanted a visual confirmation that the cable is functioning and it appears to be. I don't have a garage  to pull it into to do it that way where it can get dark enough to see the light. My question is it seems that the adjustment is very fine in that lots of turns on the knob produce minute adjustment to the light, and what in the light assembly actually moves? I guess I could wait until dark, find a wall and go through that procedure to verify that it actually adjusts but it seems that it turns forever and I don't detect any movement unless I'm not looking at the correct thing. Also, on the left side on the light there is another adjustment that I am going to assume is right/left? How can I know that it is actually adjusting something visually other than the seeing the light itself in the dark on a flat surface?
Awaiting your usual expertise.. :)

On my '86, I though that the adjuster did not work. Keep turning it and the light would not move. Then I just happened to stop with a building in front of me to see what was going on. It turned that I had the adjuster turned very height. After a few min of turning the knob, I got the headlight working good. Like I have read before most people turn the adjuster to high, which is what i did. Wait to night and find something that is very big that you can shine the headlight on, just out in the street will not work. You must have a background to see the focus of the light. The stock headlight does not shine up very much, it only shines on the road. I guess this is to keep the light out of the oncoming drivers, so most rides keep turning the adjuster up to see more of the area in front.

ok then that would indicate that when it reaches it's apex, the knob just keeps turning but doesn't adjust anything. I'll try and find a wall to shine at. How far away should I be?

The only thing the Service Manual states is "as specified by local laws and regulations".
Doesn't help much.

I would think that you need to be 30-50 feet away from the way.

I think that I remember it was more in the 15-20 ft range.
