Redline on GL1200
Hi all,
I have a question about my 86 Aspencade that I bought last week. At what RPM does the engine hit its redline? My last bike was much smaller so obviously the shifting points are quite different than I am used to. Hope this doesn't sound like a dopey question!

Re: Redline on GL1200
AT 7500 RPM...I found that it rarely needed to go there...Mine would flatten out on the power curve just above 5k...I'd just shift and go again.

Re: Redline on GL1200
Doesn't the tachometer have a red line at about 7500 RPMS. Normally this is part of the tach. If yours doesn't, that seems strange to me.

It has a digital readout so there is no visible frame of reference.

As mentioned, redline is 7,500 RPM. There is a red bar underneath the digital readout that will show up when you hit 6,500 RPM, and at 7,500 RPM it starts to flash:DoorCountyWI wrote:Hi all,

Red line..Your right about them being different for different bikes.I think my 88 red lined at 6500.It likes to run between 3-5K.Plenty of torque there.
My old KZ 900 was around 11500.
2 gears to 90mph..1/4 mile.What a rush.Did that once then sold it.The Officer wasn't impressed at all.
Especially when I mentioned that I has 3 more gears to go.

Re: Redline on GL1200
It is a fairly elaborate joke, I think , by the Honda engineers .
A Digital tach, unlike a mechanical tach, has no easy place where one can draw the physical orange / red LINES.
Instead, on the Digital Aspy display , at 6500rpm, a bright red light , a "Red Line " comes on, aimed right at your eyes... .......WOW !!
Startling , to say the least.. and hard to ignore .
and if you continue , this changes to a flashing "Red Line " at 7500 rpm.
Cute !!... and a nice solution to the red line problem, on a digital dash .
( I suppose they could have put a rev limiter circuit in instead ... but the Red Line still works after 30 years ...)

I remember when I first got my GSX-R750, thinking; "This thing is so powerful, so fast, I will never need to get beyond third gear!"virgilmobile wrote:Red line..Your right about them being different for different bikes.I think my 88 red lined at 6500.It likes to run between 3-5K.Plenty of torque there.

I was wrong. It had six gears, and after a few wide-open, license-shredding blasts in top gear, it was time to sell it as well.
