High Charging Voltage

Postby clanphear » Tue Jul 06, 2010 10:38 am

Hi! I'm new here and searched the boards for my question and could not find anything. My 1200 SEi has a digital readout for the charging voltage. A few weeks ago it was barely charging a maximum voltage of 10 or 12 volts and not keeping the battery up to charge. I watered the battery again, charged it to full charge, which I have been doing, except this time I took the battery out of the bike to charge it. I put the battery back in and now my charging voltage is 13.5 at an idle, 14 or 15 at around 1500 rpm's and a flashing 16 volts on the readout at anything above 1500 rpm's. The regulator/rectifier is "new" (a year ago) but that is my suspect at the moment. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

I'd still suspect the battery. Try putting a different battery in the bike (even a known good car battery would do, if you can wire it up safely), and see if it still happens.

Thanks for the tip. Tried the new battery but charging voltages were still eradic. Took it to the shop and they put a new regulator/rectifier on it and the charging voltage is back to normal. Still some problems though:
Low fuel indicator light is still on all the time.
Bike backfires through the left exhaust on decels.
Trip computer is not working - back lit only - no readouts.
Trunk light doesn't work(?)
I'm going to put a meter on it today and see if I've got any battery voltage leakage. (Battery seems to be losing charge after a few days of setting.)
I know there's lots of symptoms here. Could they be related?
